The Alethiometer’s guide to His Dark Materials 2; What do we know about the show so far.

Philip Pullman’s trilogy, His Dark Materials, which was adopted as a series with the same name, follows Lyra, an orphaned braveheart, from an alternate world whose search for her kidnapped friend leads her into uncovering various hidden truths. The eight-episode first series was aired on BBC in the UK and HBO in the US and other markets and was renewed for a second season, despite mixed reviews from critics and lower ratings.

BBC and HBO report they wanted to ensure that the 14-year-old teenage protagonist wouldn’t age much, and hence commenced filming the second season soon after. The cast is very hopeful of the season’s success and has been put their hearts and souls into it.

When will it air?

“That is a question with too complicated an answer” – Philip himself gave us an answer to the question in his book. Sources say His Dark Materials 2 will be aired before 2020 ends, just like the first season was aired(November).

The Cast

It’s safe to assume that almost all the main cast will reprise, and the show will retain its ensemble of artists. Here’s a list for you anyway:

  • Dafne Keen as Lyra Belacqua
  • Ruth Wilson as Marisa Coulter
  • Clarke Peters as The Master
  • James Cosmo as Farder Coram
  • Ariyon Bakare as Lord Boreal
  • James McAvoy as Lord Asriel
  • Lin-Manuel Miranda as Lee Scoresby

An exciting addition to this already starry cast will be the incredibly talented Andrew Scott, who was previously seen in the British Comedy-Drama Fleabag and BBC’s ever-classy Sherlock. He will be seen playing Colonel John Parry, Will Parry’s(Lyra’s future BFF) father.

Plot

The show is based on a trilogy, so logically, the second series will be based on the second book, The Subtle Knife, though fans can expect twists as those in the first season. As told before, Will Parry is sure to meet Lyra in CittĂ gazze as they go-to and fro among the various worlds and discover new universes. We might also get to see Magisterium a more significant role in the forthcoming season.

Popular Fan Theories

The dark fantasy series is bound to get more exciting, and fans expect a clash between Will Parry and Asriel. The second season also packs more adventure, bravery, and knives, as reported by Wilson(Will Parry). Let’s hope the second season is more gripping to the fans.
