In March 2021 it was confirmed that a Hellsing live-action movie adaptation of the Japanese horror manga/anime series was in development. Now, we know that John Wick franchise writer Derek Kolstad will be teaming up with Amazon Studios to develop the film, and working as the screenwriter and producer.
Automatik’s Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Fred Berger, Ranger 7 Films’ Mike Callaghan and Reuben Liber, and Soluable Fish Production’s Jason Lust will be co-producers of the Hellsing project.
My brother was the one who introduced me to the Hellsing manga and anime years ago and ever since I’ve been obsessed with the idea of adapting it. When Mike Callaghan and his team managed to secure the rights to the Hellsing franchise and then decided to partner us up with Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Amazon Studios, that’s when I realized that damn, dude, this is the dream.
Derek Kolstad commented in an exclusive Deadline news interview.
Hellsing is an action-horror Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Kouta Hirano. From May 1997 to September 2008 it was serialized in Shonen Gahosha’s seinen manga magazine Young King OURs and the manga’s chapters have been collected into ten tankobon volumes.
The series centers on Alucard – a powerful vampire who works for the mysterious and secret Hellsing Organization as it combats vampires, ghouls, and other supernatural foes that threaten England’s peace.
The wit and madness of Hellsing will be brought to life on screen
The famous vampire hunter, Van Helsing, founded the Hellsing Organization and its key weapon is the very first or “original” vampire – Alucard (which is Dracula spelled backward). Long ago, Alucard lived as Count Dracula until Van Helsing subdued him.
Due to being the “original vampire” Alucard has powers that at times make him a more Lovecraftian beast than a handsome vampire male.
I’ve always loved the vampire genre – especially when a creator puts their own unique spin on the old vampire legends. I knew we had something special in the vampire universe when Derek introduced me to Alucard and the Hellsing Organization. Kouta Hiranos’s reimagining of the Dracula-Van Helsing mythology is a blend of action, horror and comedy like we’ve never seen before. Partnering up with Brian and Fred at Automatik and also knowing we have Amazon on board to help us bring the wit and madness of Hellsing to life on the screen is very exciting.
Mike Callaghan commented on Deadline news.
Live-action Hellsing could be a horror version of John Wick
Many consider Hellsing to be a “cult” manga and anime series since it has its own special following. These devoted followers and die-hard fans are in for a real treat with this upcoming live-action adaptation, which will feature its memorable characters: Sera Victoria – a new vampire who struggles with her bloodlust, Integra Hellsing – a virginal vampire huntress, and Alexander Anderson – Alucard’s priest nemesis.
In the early 2000s, Hellsing was adapted into an anime series. Later, a retelling OVA series Hellsing Ultimate ran for ten episodes and garnered a more positive response by ramping up the bloodshed and adopting a dark, edgy style.
The film’s director, the Hellsing release date, story details, and cast haven’t been announced yet, but Anime Geek will be sure to keep you posted when more news about the adaptation is revealed! Fans speculate that the story will most likely revolve around Alucard’s training of Seras, his battle with Anderson, and maybe show the storming of the Hellsing compound by the Valentine brothers.
Some fans think Keanu Reeves would be a good fit to play Alucard since he’s already played the part of an unkillable assassin in John Wick and did a fantastic job. Other fan suggestions to play the part of Alucard have been Tom Hiddleston (known for playing Loki in the Marvel movies) and Predators’ Adrian Brody.
