The sci-fi action thriller known as Spiderhead is set to be yet another exceptional addition to an already incredibly impressive catalog of motion pictures ready to stream right now. Here is everything fans need to know about the exciting feature.
There are a lot of reasons for subscribers to check out Spiderhead, but what really makes it stand out from other titles is the well-casted talent in the lineup for the intriguing story. The ensemble includes Thor: Love and Thunder‘s Chris Hemsworth, Top Gun: Maverick‘s Miles Teller, and Lovecraft Country star Jurnee Smollett.
The film was directed by Joseph Kosinski, who has a plethora of excellent titles under his belt, including Top Gun: Maverick, Tron: Legacy and Oblivion. In addition, the screenplay was written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick; the screenwriting dynamic duo is also responsible for such popular movies like Zombieland, Deadpool and 6 Underground.
It’s no surprise that Spiderhead has built up a lot of hype since the first trailer dropped, and it’s no secret that Netflix subscribers are very eager to see what this genre-bending psychological thriller has to offer. The feature has a runtime of 107 minutes, making it an ideal movie night choice.
Spiderhead is based on a short story that was first published in The New Yorker back in 2010 called Escape from Spiderhead. It was also available in author George Saunder’s Tenth of December, a collection of short stories that was released in 2013.
The movie takes place in a near-future society and follows two convicts trapped in a facility that lets prisoners get reduced time by volunteering to take mind-altering drugs for experimentation purposes. Together they grapple with their past and try to survive the mind-bending ordeal before it’s too late.
Here is the official Netflix synopsis:
In a state-of-the-art penitentiary run by brilliant visionary Steve Abnesti (Chris Hemsworth), inmates wear a surgically attached device that administers dosages of mind-altering drugs in exchange for commuted sentences. There are no bars, no cells, or orange jumpsuits. In Spiderhead, incarcerated volunteers are free to be themselves. Until they’re not.
At times, they’re a better version. Need to lighten up? There’s a drug for that. At a loss for words? There’s a drug for that, too. But when two subjects, Jeff (Miles Teller) and Lizzy (Jurnee Smollett), form a connection, their path to redemption takes a twistier turn, as Abnesti’s experiments start to push the limits of free will altogether.
