Kenan & Kel started as a spin-off of Nickelodeon’s sketch show, All That. It became clear early on with their performances on All That that Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell had something special and were clear fan favorites. So, they got their own show in 1996 and now it’s finally headed to Netflix after all these years.
But unlike All That, Kenan & Kel was not a sketch show. It was a sitcom. It was set in Chicago and followed Kenan Rockmore and Kel Kimble, a couple of high school students who get into all kinds of shenanigans.
Each episode usually had to do with Kenan trying to find ways to get rich quick or ways to get out of trouble with his elders. Kel usually messed up those plans by being his usual goofy self.
No matter what happened in the episode, they would start and end with Kenan and Kel interacting with the studio audience while in character.
At the beginning, Kenan would always know what was going to happen in the episode and refuse to tell Kel. The closing of the show would often have Kenan whipping up some scheme and exiting the stage while Kel would sigh and say his catchphrase, “Aww, here it goes!” This catchphrase was also the name of the opening theme song by Coolio.
Kel was also known for his adoration for orange soda. Whenever he saw it, he declared his love and devotion to his favorite drink. It was a running gag for all four seasons.
