If you’re lucky enough to live in Tokyo, Japan, and are a fan of the anime Blue Period there is an artsy event you must attend! From June 18 to September 27, 2022, an art exhibit inspired by the Blue Period anime/manga will hold weekend art workshops for visitors.

The PIGMENT TOKYO art materials lab is currently running the “YOUR BLUE” workshop where participants can create original oil paintings using different blue shades. Artists will be able to take their artwork home with them and one lucky participant’s work will be selected from 100 participants to be displayed at the exhibit.

The inspiration for this collaboration is to encourage art lovers to find the “blue” scattered around the Tennozu area where PIGMENT TOKYO and the exhibit are located and to discover the charm of the city.

WHAT CAFÉ, which is located close by to the exhibit, will be serving four exclusive drink items inspired by the Blue Period anime in collaboration with the exhibit. One of the drinks is a blue cocktail that expresses the quietness and blueness of Shibuya in the early morning and a soda that uses the three primary colors of red, blue, and yellow as jelly. Exhibit participants will get a 200 yen (approximately 2 USD) discount on their purchases.

From June 18 to September 27, 2022, the “Blue Period Exhibition: Is Art a Talent?” exhibit will run in the Warehouse Terrada G1 Building in Tennozu, Tokyo. The exhibit features 50 physical art pieces inspired by the anime and story of Yatora and his friends, an impressive theater, and an analysis of famous artworks (most likely some works by artist Picasso from his own “blue period”).

The exhibit also features 34 art pieces by real-life school students across Japan. Their assignment was to depict the manga’s first 6 volume covers in their own unique style using various art techniques and different mediums such as charcoal, pencil, and oil.

What is Blue Period about?

The story centers around a high school student named Yatora Yaguchi, who excels in school and is popular due to his cool attitude and punk “bad boy” appearance. However, his cool façade conceals his real unhappiness, feelings of emptiness, and frustrations with his life. That all changes when he is suddenly inspired by a painting at his high school’s art club to try his hand at painting as a way to express himself.

Later, his friend Ryuji “Yuka” Ayukawa gives him the push he needs to actually join the art club and he begins to take art more seriously. As time passes, Yatora’s interest in art grows more serious until he decides he wants to apply to the Tokyo University of the Arts as his choice college. At first, those around him have a hard time accepting Yatora’s total change in goals and demeanor, but eventually, come to accept him when they see how serious he is and how talented he is starting to become.

Where can I read or watch Blue Period?

The Blue Period anime was inspired by the Japanese manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Tsubasa Yamaguchi. Since July 2017, the manga has been serialized in Kodansha’s seinen manga magazine Monthly Afternoon. As of May 2022, the manga’s chapters have been collected into twelve tankobon volumes.

Kodansha USA has licensed the manga’s English version in North America.

On September 25, 2021, the anime TV series adaptation by Studio Seven Arcs debuted on Netflix. On October 1, the series premiered in Japan. On October 9, the series was streamed in other countries. Blue Period is currently streaming worldwide on Netflix.
