The Umbrella Academy might have only returned recently for its third season, but fans are already eager for updates on the show’s future. As of writing this article on June 28, 2022, Netflix has still not canceled or renewed the popular sci-fi series, but creator Steve Blackman already has ideas for The Umbrella Academy season 4, ideas that might include the show’s ultimate ending.
Let’s face it, it’s not often that a Netflix series sticks around beyond three seasons, nonetheless four or five. But The Umbrella Academy does have a passionate fanbase and is one of Netflix’s more popular shows. Given that it has secured three seasons and leaves things on a cliffhanger in its most recent season, I don’t think Netflix is going to suddenly cancel the show. If anything, the streamer will probably announce a final season.
According to Blackman, he’d be okay with that. He spoke with TVLine recently about his plans for the series and said he pitched them The Umbrella Academy season 4 already, adding that, when he started show, he “really only knew the first four seasons.”
The Umbrella Academy season 4 status updates
Blackman’s plans are different that Gerard Way’s (who authored the comics on which the show is based). Apparently, Way has ideas to continue doing comics for much longer, even another decade. But even if the source material continues, Blackman says he has “what [he thinks] is an end to the TV show.”
“Netflix may want more than that,” he adds, “but I have a sweet thought of where I think the show should end and where we’re going.”
At the end of the show’s third season (SPOILER) all of the Hargreeves siblings lose their abilities (although maybe not Allison, it’s still unclear) after Sir Reginald basically resets the entire timeline and universe. It’s still unclear what this new world is like and whether any characters outside of the Hargreeves family have survived.
Regarding what fans can expect in a possible fourth season, Blackman told TVLine:
“There are going to be repercussions, if we’re lucky enough to have a Season 4, of the incomplete programming of the universe. Someone asked me, ‘Why would [Reginald] leave the kids in such a bad place?’ I would argue that he thinks he might be leaving them in a good place. They’ve been complaining about their powers and who they are, and now he’s saying, ‘Look, you’re free. You don’t have powers anymore, there’s nothing holding you back. Live your lives.’ The audience gets to decide whether Hargreeves did a good or bad thing for them.”
Blackman left the characters, and even this strange, “half-formed” universe in a precarious, interesting and potentially story-rich place by the end of season 3. I’d be okay with The Umbrella Academy season 4 ending the show if it’s inline with Blackman’s plans for the series. What about you?
