8 best Netflix movies to watch on Fourth of July 2022

-

Are you looking for good patriotic movies on Netflix to enjoy over the Fourth of July weekend? Or if you’d prefer, we’ve also listed some fun Netflix movies that aren’t necessarily patriotic, but are just enjoyable to watch (or involve aliens, since let’s be honest, Independence Day is a classic and sadly it’s not on Netflix).

Stranger Things is the big hot-ticket item this weekend with season 4 part 2 finally arriving. Expect almost four hours of intensity as the heroes face-off against Vecna. But what about after you finish that? Or maybe you just want to have a movie night rather than focusing on television?

For those who are staying in for Fourth of July or just need something to watch in the background during your family barbecues and parties, the following list should offer some choices perfectly-suited to the holiday weekend.

Best Netflix movies to watch on Fourth of July 2022

Best Netflix movies - best action movies on Netflix - Red Notice 2

Red Notice (2021)

Uniting some of the biggest stars in the world—Gal Gadot, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Ryan Reynolds—Red Notice is a blockbuster-worthy affair brimming with humor and excellent action sequences.

Johnson plays an FBI agent who must team-up with renowned art thief (Reynolds) to catch an even more infamous criminal (Gadot). Directed by Central Intelligence‘s Rawson Marshall Thurber, Red Notice might not have the most original plot you’ve ever seen, but Johnson and Reynold’s chemistry makes up for it.

If you just want to turn your brain off and enjoy a silly, fast-paced and funny movie with your family this weekend, this movie is a great choice. Netflix must think so, too, since it’s getting two sequels with the cast and director set to return.

War of the Worlds (2005)

Since Independence Day isn’t streaming on Netflix right now, you can get your alien invasion fix from the 2005 film War of the Worlds, an adaptation of H.G. Wells’s classic sci-fi novel of the same name.

Directed by Steven Spielberg, War of the Worlds is an epic movie starring Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning. Cruise plays a dock worker that must protect his daughter at all costs when extraterrestrials invade the earth and devastate thousands with massive war machines.

Everything about this movie has incredible scope and size, it’s not a horror movie but some of the sequences are genuinely chilling and quite frightening at times. It’s a great popcorn flick with a surprising amount of depth and excellent performances from Cruise and Fanning.

Extinction. Cr. Netflix.

Extinction (2018)

Like War of the Worlds, Extinction is a solid replacement for Independence Day if you’re looking for an alien invasion movie. Michael Peña stars as an engineer plagued by recurring nightmares of an alien attack. Lo and behold his terrifying dreams become a reality and he must fight to protect his wife (Lizzy Caplan) and their two daughters from extraterrestrial beings.

Admittedly, this movie isn’t as big and exciting as War of the Worlds or Independence Day as it aims for quieter, character-driven drama, but it’s not bad if you’re looking for something a little different and Caplan is always excellent.

Hustle

Hustle (2022)

Adam Sandler might be known for his comedy, but whenever he takes a turn into a different genre he makes a fierce argument for why he shouldn’t be under-valued as an actor. Hustle is one of his best movies and while it’s not as serious as say, Uncut Gems, it is more of a sports drama than his standard comedic fare.

Sandler plays Stanley Sugerman, a basketball scout for the Philadelphia 76ers. All he wants is to be a coach, but to do so he needs to fine one more player that can help his team net an NBA championship. Enter Juancho Hernangómez, the real-life basketball player plays talented amateur Bo Cruz, who Stanley discovers and brings back to the states without consulting his team. Stanley has to prove that Bo is everything he says he is or risk losing everything.

If you’re in the mood to watch a sports movie this weekend, Hustle is the perfect pick. What’s more American than a movie starring Adam Sandler and Queen Latifah?

Patriotic movies on Netflix for Fourth of July

If you’re looking for something that’s a little more classically patriotic then the following films on Netflix will be the perfect choice for your Fourth of July weekend.

Forrest Gump (1994)

Forrest Gump is actually considered a fantastic Fourth of July movie. Bustle put it best, noting that the character of Forrest really perfectly embodies the idea of the “American dream.”

It’s a great, feel-good movie with one of Tom Hanks’s most memorable performances, which is saying something considering Hanks’s entire career has consisted of countless great performances. The movie is on Netflix for now, but will be leaving the service at the end of July, so make sure you revisit it while you still can.

Forrest lives a pretty sheltered life with his mother (Sally Field). The movie chronicles his adventures from playing college football to fighting in Vietnam and everything in between, all the while Forrest inspires countless people with his boundless optimism.

Saving Private Ryan (1998)

Fourth of July feels like the perfect time to have a Tom Hanks movie marathon, so after you finish Forrest Jump, why not revisit Saving Private Ryan? Steven Spielberg’s epic war movie is considered a classic.

Hanks plays Captain John Miller who must take his men behind enemy lines to find Private James Ryan, whose brothers have been killed in combat. The movie takes a cold hard look at the brutal realities of war as each men embarks on a personal journey. You’ll definitely need to keep some tissues while watching this movie as it can be quite the tearjerker.

The Patriot (2000)

Netflix has a lot of great older movies on its service right now and Roland Emmerich’s The Patriot is just one of several. In one of Mel Gibson’s most famous films, The Patriot sees a soldier-turned-farmer abandon on his newfound pacifist ideals to rescue his son when he gets captured by the enemy.

Desperate to save his child, Benjamin Martin (Gibson) forms a regiment of patriots to utilize guerrilla tactics and get him back. Besides Gibson, The Patriot also stars Jason Isaacs, Heath Ledger and Joely Richardson.

America: the Motion Picture (2021)

This hilarious animated feature boasts talented comedic actors like Channing Tatum, Simon Pegg, Will Forte, Andy Samberg, Judy Greer, Olivia Munn, Bobby Moynihan and many more!

Drastically different in tone than just about any other movie on this list, America: the Motion Picture is the perfect Netflix movie to watch this weekend if you want something silly that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Featuring a chainsaw-wielding George Washington and several outlandish versions of our country’s founding fathers, this cheeky film riffs on the American Revolution.

Which of these patriotic movies on Netflix are you looking forward to watching on this Fourth of July weekend?
