Yu Yu Hakusho is frequently regarded as one of the greatest Shonen series. Yoshihiro Togashi, who created Yu Yu Hakusho, is also the creator of Gon, Killua, and the other hunters in Hunter x Hunter.

While working on the revival of the latter series, the mangaka has unveiled a fresh perspective on Hiei, one of the most important characters who fought with Spirit Detective Yusuke Yurameshi but who started out his anime career as a demonic foe looking to show his might.

Yoshihiro Togashi’s new art

The illustration, which Togashi the Hunter x Hunter creator posted on Twitter, depicts Hiei with the Dragon of the Darkness Flame twirling around him while wearing a costume similar to but different from the one he wears throughout most of YuYu Hakusho. The sarcastic fire demon, who first appears as the primary antagonist in one of the story’s earlier arcs, later joins the main heroic group.

Hiei is a character similar to Vegeta from Dragon Ball, Sasuke from Naruto, and Zoro from One Piece in that he is a stoic fighter whose strength frequently equals that of the protagonist. He initially appeared as a foe that Yusuke had to prove his might against.

Still, in later arcs like the Dark Tournament Saga, Chapter Black Arc, and the series’ conclusion, he joined forces with the Shonen protagonist and fought for humanity. Hiei, as is evident, underwent significant alteration over the series yet is still adored by many anime fans.

Yu Yu Hakusho: Togashi’s limelight

In December 1990, Togashi began publishing YuYu Hakusho in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, and it did so every month until the end of the series in 1994.

The narrative follows troubled kid Yusuke Urameshi, who, after dying and rising from the dead, is appointed the Spirit Detective and given the duty of looking into cases involving demons and apparitions in the Human World.

The novel is divided into 175 distinct chapters. YuYu Hakusho has sold over 50 million copies in Japan alone, and it has won numerous awards for excellence in the field, including the renowned Shogakukan Manga Award in 1993.

Hunter x Hunter, Togashi’s most recent series, debuted in Weekly Shonen Jump in March 1998. It chronicles the exploits of a young boy named Gon Freeces as he attempts to become a well-known Hunter like his father.

The tale has generated 36 volumes’ worth of material thus far. The manga is one of Shueisha’s most lucrative series, along with YuYu Hakusho. As of July 2022, more than 84 million copies have been distributed.

Numerous anime, films, video games, and even musicals have all been made from the Hunter x Hunter manga.

The Hiei drawing is not the only brand-new work of art that Togashi has recently made available. Additionally, he published an illustration with figures from two well-known manga.

The photograph was produced to advertise “Puzzle,” a forthcoming exhibition honoring the mangaka’s 35-year career. In Japan, “Puzzle” will run from October 28, 2022, through January 9, 2023.

You can watch YuYu Hakusho and Hunter x Hunter on Crunchyroll and Hulu.
