On July 1, HBO axed the romantic drama series The Time Traveler’s Wife after only one season, and fans of the show immediately started sounding off about the network’s decision. Now people are wondering if Netflix will swoop in and save the day by picking it up. We shared the chances of this happening below.
The Time Traveler’s Wife is an HBO original series based on the 2003 novel of the same name by Audrey Niffenegger. The show was directed by David Nutter and written and developed by Steven Moffat. Nutter is best known for his work on the popular HBO series Game of Thrones. You might also recognize Moffat from his work on BBC’s Doctor Who and Sherlock.
The story follows the complicated yet heartwarming love story between a man with a rare genetic disorder that causes him to travel involuntarily for short periods and a woman who meets and falls in love with him when she was just 6 years old.
Game of Thrones Rose Leslie and Divergent‘s Theo James star alongside each other as Claire Abshire and Henry DeTamble. The rest of the talented cast includes Desmin Borges, Natasha Lopez, Michael Park, Jaime Ray Newman, Taylor Richardson, Peter Graham, Kate Siegel, Josh Stamberg, Chelsea Frei, and others. So what is the likelihood that our favorite streamer will pick up The Time Traveler’s Wife for season 2? Here’s what we think.
Will Netflix save HBO’s The Time Traveler’s Wife?
There’s a slight possibility, but it’s more likely that the streamer will not order a second season. First, it’s unclear if the show is even being shopped around at the moment. Series creator Steven Moffat nor Warner Bros. has spoken out about the show’s plans after its cancellation.
Also, it’s important to note that Netflix rarely picks up shows from other networks or streaming services. A lot goes into Netflix’s decision-making, but two of the main factors are viewership and fan base. According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Time Traveler’s Wife wasn’t really bringing in the numbers. In other words, not enough people were watching the show over its run. Also, the show received a generally negative reception which could’ve also played a part in its cancelation. Although the romantic drama series has a loyal fan base, I’m not sure it’s big enough for Netflix to want to take a chance on it.
After the considerable decline in subscriptions and the termination of many employees, Netflix hasn’t really been in a position to make big moves. So I’d say the chances of Netflix picking up The Time Traveler’s Wife are slim to none. However, never say never, right? So continue signing petitions and making your voices heard because just maybe Netflix or another streamer might pick it up.
