3 reasons Stranger Things star Sadie Sink deserved a nomination

-

Another awards show is making its way to us, and this time around it’s all about the 2022 Emmy Awards. On July 12, the Television Academy announced the full list of nominees. And in a shocking and disappointing turn of events, Stranger Things actress Sadie Sink wasn’t on the list.

Due to the Emmy Awards eligibility window and the fact that Stranger Things season 4 was split into two parts, the Academy could only consider volume 1, which consists of seven of the nine episodes, for this year’s nominations. I mean, Sink totally knocked it out of the park in the finale, but that episode wasn’t eligible.

The one that did make the window is episode 4, “Dear Billy.” Of course, the lovely actress really proved herself all season, but it was especially so in the fourth episode. It’s very hard to believe she didn’t receive a nomination. And here’s why we think so.

Why Stranger Things star Sadie Sink deserved an Emmy nomination

The ultimate pop culture moment

Anyone on the Internet, whether they’ve watched Stranger Things season 4 or not, now know the song “Running Up That Hill” by Kate Bush. That’s because the series managed to create a pop culture moment and brought the ’80s song back up the number 1 spot on iTunes!

Yes, the song is great. But it’s also the context that made it skyrocket. The show has used other music in previous seasons, but none made such an impact on viewers. And that’s because of the scene stealer, Sink. Her acting and the emotion behind her trying to break free from Vecna’s spell is what made this such an important moment that fans will never forget.

Acting with visual effects

And speaking of Vecna’s spell, the talented actress had to do most of that sequence with so many visual effects. Jamie Campbell Bower was decked out in his Vecna costume, and some physical props of the monster’s lair were around. But the actress had to mostly rely on her imagination when doing the scene, and that’s not easy. The part where she’s looking at Lucas, Dustin, and Steve shouting for her, and so much more of the astounding scene, were added in later through editing.

A difficult headspace

It goes even further in the finale, but in “Dear Billy,” Sink had a lot of challenging material she had to work with. Actors have to get into the headspace of their characters to really be able to sell it to the audience that this is what’s happening. And she managed to do that so brilliantly, especially at such a young age!

Overall Stranger Things season 4 volume 1 was able to get a total of 13 nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series. But really, Sadie Sink deserved to be recognized for her portrayal of troubled teen Max Mayfield this year. I’m holding onto hope that she’ll get some love when volume 2 is eligible, and perhaps for season 5 depending on what the writers decide to do with her character.

The 74th Emmy Awards will be broadcast live Monday, Sept. 12 on NBC, and will stream live on Peacock. The show runs from 8-11 p.m. ET.

Stranger Things season 4 is now streaming on Netflix.
