Who is Kurama?

For those new to the world of YuYu Hakusho, Yoko Kurama, also known as Shuichi Minamino, and Kurama the Yoko (fox demon) in the English Dub is one of the main heroes in the anime/manga series YuYu Hakusho that was written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi.

There’s more to Kurama than meets the eye. 15 years ago, a silver-haired fox demon was being pursued by his enemies and became mortally wounded. In order to save his life he transferred his spirit to the body of a newborn human baby named Shuichi Minamino.

As soon as Kurama inhabited the baby’s body his psyche gained control. Throughout the series he struggles with being part-demon part-human, and tries to find a balance between his two personalities.

After the Dark Tournament, he can switch between his human form and his demon form at will. His most common form is his human form, but he is referred to as “Kurama” by everyone except his distant classmates, his mom, and his foster family, who refer to him as Shuichi Minamino.

What do Kurama’s two forms look like?

Kurama’s human form has bright green eyes and long, vibrant red hair. In the manga, he has brown eyes and is a brunette. Due to his long hair and delicate features Shuichi is oftentimes mistaken for a woman, which he hates. In the anime, his school uniform is a reddish pink color with matching slacks, while in the manga it is a dark blue color.

While in his demon-fox form, Kurama has golden eyes with slit pupils, silver fox ears, a tail, and long, flowing silvery-white hair. He wears a white, sleeveless yukata with split sides along with hakama pants and zori sandals.

What is Kurama’s personality like and what are his abilities?

Out of the main characters in the anime YuYu Hakusho, Kurama is the most calculating, cunning and analytical. In battle, he is quick to recognize the patterns his opponents make, which gives him an edge.

Kurama has highly tuned battle instincts, which gives him a physical advantage over his opponents. However, Kurama prefers to rely on his brains, and likes to analyze his opponents while conducting different strategies based on their abilities and fighting styles.

Despite how his instincts might take over in battle and allow him to easily behead an opponent, he has a kind heart and would sacrifice anything to protect his friends or family. This makes him a trustworthy ally despite his cunning nature. Several villains in the series try to take advantage of Kurama’s kindness in order to defeat him.

Kurama also has an interesting ability to shut off his emotions so that he will not become distracted during battle. While he usually emerges as the most injured after a fight he still emerges as the victor, always managing to use an ace in the hole.

When Kurama is in his demon form, he is known as Yoko Kurama, and tends to act more cruel, vindictive and merciless, but he still retains his intellect. Yoko Kurama appears to enjoy toying with his enemies sadistically as shown during the Dark Tournament.

In the anime, at first, it appears as though Kurama has two totally different personalities, but it is later explained that when his demonic spirit entered the human body of Minamino Shuichi their souls merged together, so he is both the demon Kurama as well as the human Minamino Shuuichi.

He is a close friend with Yusuke due to the fact the Spirit Detective spared his life and willingly offered his own life in order to save Kurama and his human mother at one point during the series. His friendship with Hiei is based on an alliance to defeat the Eight Hands – a group of evil demons.
