Mo’Nique teams with Netflix for new comedy special following lawsuit

Academy award-winning actress Mo’Nique is set to film her first Netflix comedy special, which is a shock to us all since the talented actress just recently settled her lawsuit with the streaming service in June.

Mo’Nique and Netflix haven’t always been on good terms. Their rocky relationship started in 2019 when the Precious actress accused the streamer of racial and gender discrimination. It began when Netflix offered Mo’Nique $500,000 for a one-hour comedy special in 2018. She rejected what she considered a lowball offer and accused the streamer of systematically underpaying Black women. She also pointed out how the streamer had no problem paying out tens of millions of dollars for other comedians, such as Amy Schumer, Ricky Gervais, Ellen DeGeneres, and Dave Chappelle for their Netflix comedy specials. Ultimately, Mo’Nique ended up filing a pay discrimination lawsuit against Netflix in November 2019.

On June 15, Mo’Nique and Netflix settled the lawsuit, but the terms of the settlement were not disclosed. However, their agreement likely involved Mo’Nique getting her own Netflix comedy special.

Mo’Nique announces first Netflix comedy special

On July 19, Netflix released a video featuring Mo’Nique announcing her upcoming stand-up special through its official Twitter account. In the video, Mo’Nique says, “Hey, y’all, it’s your girl Mo’Nique and I’m so excited to share that I’ll be shooting my first Netflix comedy special. Oh, and in case you didn’t hear, I’m also reuniting with my friend, my brother, Director Mr. Lee Daniels on the Netflix film The Deliverance. You won’t want to miss either of them. So y’all stay tuned, and thank y’all my sweet babies. I love us for real.”

The comedy special’s title is unknown at the moment, but production is slated to start sometime this year in Atlanta, Georgia. The streamer also announced that additional details about the comedy special would be revealed later this year.

As mentioned above, Mo’Nique is also set to star in an upcoming thriller film titled The Deliverance by Lee Daniels. Andra Day, Glenn Close, Aunjanue Ellis, Caleb McLaughlin, Tasha Smith, Omar Epps, Demi Singleton, Miss Lawrence, and Anthony B. Jenkins will also star in the film.

As more information comes out about Mo’Nique’s Netflix comedy special, we’ll be sure to share what we found. So stay tuned to Gizmo Blaze!
