There’s good news for Berserk fans – the manga has resumed its serialization with Kentarou Miura’s close friend and fellow manga artist, Mori Kouji, acting as director of the project. Back in their high school days, Miura and Mori co-authored a sci-fi doujinshi, which was sent to Weekly Shonen Sunday but didn’t make it past the last round of selections.
I think it’s safe to say Kentarou Miura’s legacy is in safe hands with his close friend at the helm and the talented artists of Studio Gaga: Kurosaki, Hirai Nobuhiro, Miyaji Akio, Nagashima Naohide, Kinoshita Shigeru, and Sugimoto Hideaki. Miura’s friends and apprentices know how he wanted to end Berserk, which means Guts’ story will have the end Miura envisioned.
Leaked images from the manga’s new chapters can now be found online and fans really like what they’re seeing so far. The artwork appears to be extremely high quality, it maintains its original unique style, and the dark mood of Berserk has been nicely preserved as well.
Chapter 364 was the final chapter that Miura was able to work on. The chapter centered on the Moonlight Boy and the mystery of his origin. Schierke thought the child was the Flowerstorm King in disguise, but the Lady Danan explains that’s not the case and that the child isn’t evil, or else he wouldn’t have been able to reach the island of the fae.
Under normal circumstances, the boy would only appear on nights when the moon was full, but in the fae world, Elfhelm, time passes differently, and the child is able to stay with Casca and the others for days. Casca and the Moonlight Boy’s interaction is reminiscent of a mother with her child, and even Casca begins to realize the truth behind the boy’s origins.
Meanwhile, Guts struggles with trying to separate himself from the cursed armor but realizes it’s futile. Without the armor, he can’t fight and he won’t be able to survive. He has become completely bound to the armor with no escape. The Moonlight Boy plays with Guts’ armor before he tells the kid to go and play with the others instead.
At the very end of Berserk Chapter 364, the Moonlight Boy suddenly transforms into a likeness of Griffith, and Berserk manga readers were left behind with a great mystery and one hell of a cliffhanger.
10. Guts and Puck fighting side by side
Berserk Chapter 365 opens with dawn breaking and the fae people sensing the arrival of a malevolent presence on the island. The fae beings state, “A fearsome being has come from the outside and breached the island”.
9. The fae and elves begin to panic in Elfhelm
When the Moonlight Boy transformed from a kid into “Griffith” that’s when the fae people sensed the arrival of a fearsome being. At this point in the manga, it is still unclear whether or not Casca’s child, the Moonlight Boy, has transformed into a likeness of Griffith, or if Griffith somehow used his demonic power to change places with the child in order to infiltrate the island.
Griffith has a connection to the Moonlight Boy because he was intimate with Casca while she was pregnant with Guts’ child. Because of what happened to Casca during the Eclipse her unborn child became corrupted by demonic influences.
8. The Moonlight Boy transforms into Griffith
Guts watches this transformation in the dawn light in confusion and fear and decides to attack “Griffith”.
7. Guts attacks Griffith
Meanwhile, Casca senses that something is wrong and starts to rush through the house in the direction of “Griffith” and Guts.
6. The cursed armor takes over Guts
Berserk Chapter 366 opens with Guts trying to kill “Griffith”. No matter how hard Guts swings his sword, however, his sword simply passes straight through “Griffith”.
5. Griffith appears to be invulnerable
Meanwhile, Schierke uses Astral Projection in order to investigate what is going on and sees “Griffith” on the Astral Plane with a blazing halo of energy around him. She’s about to get sucked in by the powerful energy that surrounds “Griffith” when Farnese appears and manages to pull Schierke back to safety.
Guts continues to try and defeat “Griffith” when a familiar enemy suddenly descends from the sky – Zodd. For those who need a quick refresher, Zodd is a legendary swordsman and powerful apostle rumored to have killed thousands of adversaries on the battlefield. For 300 years Zodd slaughtered his foes until his mysterious disappearance. He later resurfaces in Guts’ lifetime and later joins Griffith.
4. Zodd descends upon Guts
Zodd has a thirst for battle and this thirst is only quenched when he fights against his rival the Skull Knight. Zodd decides to join an incarnated Griffith in order to find someone strong enough to give him a good fight. Zodd serves Griffith as one of the White Falcon’s most trusted warriors in the reborn Band of the Falcon.
3. Zodd protects Griffith
Berserk Chapter 367 opens with Zodd intercepting an attack toward Griffith from Guts. The Immortal and the Black Swordsman, engage in battle, but Guts deflects an attack from Zodd and maneuvers past the apostle, and rushes towards Griffith.
2. Guts versus Zodd – a fierce battle ensues
Meanwhile, Lady Danan, Isidro, Isma, and Serpico are walking through the forest and turn to say “goodbye” to Lady Danan. As Lady Danan is walking away from the others she suddenly collapses. Everyone rushes to her side and Lady Danan says, “Everything will be lost. I sense great danger! They shall spring forth from the Earth, one after the other…!”
Then, we see Griffith approaching the unconscious Casca, Schierke, and Farnese while Guts tries to intercept them. Guts directs an overhead download slash towards Griffith and although it touches his shoulder it appears to do no damage. Griffith pulls the unconscious Casca into his arms and Guts sees red.
The ground begins to quake and open up below them, and Guts becomes separated from Griffith and Casca by a deep ravine. The cherry blossom tree becomes uprooted and cherry blossoms begin to fade. After the fading of Elfhelm’s great cherry tree blossoms and the advent of the calamity in the elven kingdom, Zodd watches as Griffith scoops Casca up into his arms.
1. Griffith kidnaps Casca
These three new chapters have left manga readers with more questions than answers. Who is the Moonlight Boy really? Did the Moonlight Boy mature into the form of Griffith because he is Guts and Casca’s son, who was influenced by that time Griffith was intimate with Casca, or did he actually become Griffith?
Because Zodd is protecting “Griffith” it would make sense that being is the real Griffith. But what would this mean? Did Griffith/Femto use the demon baby as the material catalyst to return to life? Is the Moonlight Boy Guts and Casca’s child that is only able to manifest on moonlight nights when Griffith isn’t in control of his body? Or is the Moonlight Boy merely the “good” that Griffith has tried to cast away in order to attain power?
If Griffith has somehow possessed the body of Guts and Casca’s child, Casca would never allow Guts to kill Griffith. Skull Knight hinted that what Casca desires won’t be the same as what Guts desires in the end. This development would make things incredibly complicated between the two of them.
If the Moonlight Boy is what is left of the “good” Griffith, then Guts will probably find a way to separate the Moonlight Boy and Griffith, so that they can all have “good” Griffith back with them again. The manga has been hinting for a while now that Guts would ultimately forgive Griffith despite everything he’s done since he feels partly responsible for how Griffith spiraled into a dark place.
Will Griffith simply flee with Casca back to his own kingdom? If Griffith kidnaps Casca it’s obvious that Guts will end up having to pursue her to Griffith’s Kingdom. Will Casca try to kill Griffith or will she forgive him? Also, does Griffith plan to destroy Elfhelm before he goes with a demon invasion? We’ll have to wait for the next manga update from Berserk Chapter 368, which is coming out on August 12, 2022, in order to find out!
