What is the plot of Reborn as a Vending Machine, I Now Wander the Dungeon?
The story begins when a Japanese male “vending machine” otaku (basically this means he was passionate about vending machines and knew facts about them) is crushed to death by a falling vending machine, and is ironically reincarnated in a fantasy world dungeon as a sentient vending machine.
He is chagrined to discover that although he can see and hear his speech is limited to stock Japanese vending machine phrases, such as: “Welcome” or “Too bad”.
In order to survive, he discovers that he is able to sell any item he has bought in his previous life and covert those sales into points that sustain his existence. He learns that he is able to use excess coins to add additional features to his vending machine body and is able to choose which items he carries and decide on their prices. Later, he also learns how to use certain magical abilities, such as creating a defensive force field.
A young, buster hunter girl named Lammis stumbles upon the vending machine while wandering about in the middle of the forest. Lammis has a skill known as Blessing of Might, which gives her superhuman strength.
Vending Machine quickly decides to befriend the starving Lammis and dispenses some food to her. She instantly takes a liking to him and affectionately calls him “Boxxo”.
Lammis is able to carry Boxxo around on her back, which would seem like a burden except for the fact Lammis usually has trouble controlling her overwhelming strength and with Boxxo’s added weight she is finally able to control it. Lammis sets out on an adventure with her new “friend” Boxxo and explores the dungeon, encountering interesting individuals along the way.
Where can I read the light novel and manga?
In March 2016, Hirukuma published the series online as a web novel on the user-generated novel publishing website Shosetsuka ni Naro. Later, Kadokawa Shoten acquired the series to publish as a light novel. On August 1, 2016, Kadokawa Shoten published its first volume and has published 3 total.
During the Anime Expo 2017, Yen Press announced that they had licensed the series for an English release.
On August 27, 2021, a manga adaptation illustrated by Kunieda began serialization in ASCII Media Works’ shonen manga magazine Dengeki Daioh (Kadokawa). The manga’s English version has been licensed by Yen Press as a digital simulpublication.
